Stories in the Mountains

Everyone at some point in their lives hopes for or waits for a life- changing experience. Jonesborough, Tennessee was that moment for me—a life change experience I’m truly grateful for.

So how can traveling far from home, leaving my family behind to head north to some back country in the mountains of Tennessee be a life changing experience and have such an impact on my life? I’ll tell you, but first let me give you some insight on “Pre-Jonesborough” times.

When I joined Cherish Bound I had many reasons why I wanted to join…great business opportunity, believed in the concept, wanted to find a “job” that I liked, feed my habit, success, and the list goes on. I wanted Cherish Bound in my life and in my family’s life and I wanted to successfully share it with others. I created an atmosphere around myself that included Cherish Bound. I have always known that it was no accident and I truly believe I have a mission with Cherish Bound.

So I won a trip to Jonesborough, Tennessee to the National Story Telling Festival for being the top Consultant that year. This was going to be an adventures...an experience that left me walking away a different person.

I had a picture in my mind of what I thought the adventure would be like…little airplanes from hell, small creepy town, lots of walking, and you should know...I was 6 months pregnant with TWINS! As I arrived at the Atlanta airport to saw Bruce and Carol, Cherish Bound's Founders, waiting for me at my gate. I knew at that instant this would be four days I would never forget. The quality time I was able to spend with these two amazing people was priceless. Not very many people have been able to have this type of quality time with them. They were able to teach me, be examples and give me confirmation that what I’m doing with Cherish Bound is right.

I was able to meet people who were well-known in the Storytelling industry, have dinner with an author and receive and share knowledge and experiences with them. This time spent validated me as a credible resource for those with a passion for storytelling. It now gives me the right to say, “I’ve been to Jonesborough. I know what you love,” and I can now relate to this amazing world.

The main focus of this Jonesborough trip is this small little town, riddled with white tents and a beautiful mysterious history...not to mention there were over 10,000 story lovers gathered in one little place. I had no idea what I was in for. From tears to hysterical laughter, to deep thought, those storytellers entranced my mind hour after hour. Listening to the men and women lay their hearts and souls in the streets of Jonesborough gave me so much inspiration for life and motivation for my business.

I have walked away ready to conquer the Cherish Bound world. I learned from these tellers so many elements of story and why we are sharing Cherish Bound's message with the world. They were able to take very small, but significant moments in their lives and bring them to life right before my heart. I learned I can teach my customers to take a small and simple moment and turn it into a life-changing story for those they love. Sharing story is something that brings a little more light and a little more peace to the world around us.

If I can share anything with you at all it is that I hope you can grasp a small part of the passion that has stirred in me. Share it, tell it, live it! There truly is a magic in storytelling. Find out about storytelling festivals in your own area and go enjoy them with your family! It'll be come a new tradition that everyone will look forward to.

(This is a re-post from about a year ago,
when I was the only person who read my blog...maybe I still am the only person ;o)

Storytime ♥ Guest Blogger - Heidi Rosenburg

Welcome again, Heidi Rosenburg with
Barefoot Books.

Too Many Books?
One sentence that drives me mad is when some one comes to my book stall and says "they have too many books". I don't mind if they don't want to buy books. I am a big believer in libraries and visit them often with my two little one (yes I sell books that we absolutely love, but I will not deprive them of a even broader spectrum of books to love). I do mind when they say "they have too many books as their children don't read the ones they have."

Shouldn't they ask themselves why their children don't read the books they have. Thinking of a lot of my friends houses, many of their books are no longer age appropriate for their children. These books should be removed (stored, sold, given away, what ever they want to do with them). This probably gets rid of the majority of the books. Next they should take a critical look at the books they have left. Are they on a topic the child actually enjoys?

For example, if a child likes princesses, feed their imagination with good old fashioned princess stories. Steer clear of the new modern day commercialism. Every child, every age has a passion, whether its animals, dinosaurs , princesses, pirates, insects, cars, planes, I could go on. What ever subject it is, if they like the subject they will be interested in reading and looking at pictures about that subject.

Research has actually shown that children improve their reading ability by reading a lot. Independent reading increases both vocabulary and reading fluency.

Children who choose their own books usually reads more books and spends more time reading. If they start reading young (or have books read to them from an early age) they are more motivated to continue reading as they advance though the grade levels.

So can a child have too many books? The answer is they can have too many wrong books but if if they only have books that are appropriate for them they can never have too many books! So the next time you are walking pass a book stall with your child, have them browse and see what interests them or talk to your child find out what type of book they would like to own. The better books they will want to read again and again,

To help you purchase the right books for your children, Barefoot Books are running a free shipping campaign until Mother's day May 10th. Please feel free to combine this with my 10% off coupon.

May is an exciting month, I recommend "off we go to Mexico" for Cinco de Mayo, Motherbridge of Love for Mothers day and for anyone planning a long car journey I recommend our books with CDs such as "we all go traveling by, Creepy Crawly Calypso or Portside Pirates, Jack and The Beanstalk, House that Jack Built".

Thank you Heidi!! Great recommendations for books! We have a few of those she mentioned and my kids LOVE THEM!!!

Tuesday Tradition #43 - March Is All About WOMEN!

Did you know March is Women's History Month?

I didn't...just found out! Why is this not radiating through the media? Why is it not plastered on magazines or newspapers? Why are women, good women, who helped shape our nation not recognized the way they should be?? And not just popular famous women? What about the average woman who kept a family together and thriving during the depression? Or a single mom who fought to keep her children fed and clothed as her husband fought for freedom 1000's of miles away? Or a women who followed her dreams of becoming a teacher, doctor, or dentist despite the odds and obstacles?

Women's History Month is a time to celebrate the tradition and legacy of women. I was reading a letter from the editor, Julie B., in HomeMadeSimple's newsletter that said this:

"March is Women’s History Month: a time for celebrating women’s heritage and inspiring stories. Women have always had a role in keeping the history of their families and communities alive, through storytelling, handing down recipes, and keeping family treasures safe. This month, we’ll take a look back to highlight the classic and timeless heirlooms, comforting recipes and traditions that enrich our lives and homes today."

Perfectly said...

My challenge to you WOMEN, keep the role alive! Embrace and honor the roll we have in keeping our family and community history alive...pass on the stories of your life, create warmth and joy in your home, and respect the treasures that have been put in our care. Through traditions we can fulfill this sacred calling of being a wife, mother and woman.

It Got 'Em Through The Depression....

"Don't underestimate the power of storytelling. It got folks through the Depression. It can work now, too."
- Ann Banks

A powerful statement and true. I consider myself "young" but I have heard my share of "Depression Stories".

I remember sitting on my Grandme's porch during the summer nights or around the dinner table at holidays and such and listened to her stories of survival, hope, family, and simplicity. At the time I didn't know how powerful they were, but as I've grown up and started a family of my own, I now see them as a treasure. My other grandma told me many stories as well, and I always remembered her telling me about how hard they worked, how happy they were, and how much they loved each other during the Depression. Both of them told me how their families would gather around together and tell stories. Because that's all they had.

Families had nothing....but each other. They learned from each other. They were humble. Teachable. They continued on through horrific circumstances and still managed to prevail. And they had stories. Stories were free. Stories would give them permission to continue to dream, escape, and remember. Stories were their connection to the past, future, and present. Stories were a lifeline between generations.

I can't even imagine the pain and horrible living conditions many lived day in and day out during the Depression....but what I'm intrigued by is how they made the most of it with NOTHING. Many became strong, closer, and loved more. And stories helped get them through it. When they were though it, stories helped them teach. And as the years went on their stories gave strength and connection.

Listen to stories and tell stories. Listen and learn from those who lived it. Tell stories now to give your family something to hold on to. Even though the world may be shaking and crumbling outside our front door, we don't have to allow it to bring our families down. Story is a gift we can give to our children and it's real piece of us that they can hold on to...and it costs nothing.

Storytime ♥ Dirty Joe the Pirate

This book will be every little brother's favorite!
From what I hear...the tale of "Dirty Joe the Pirate" is a true story.....

Author and storyteller Bill Harley writes another amazing book and Jack E. Davis illustrates wonderful pictures that drifts the imagination off on a wild adventure. I've had the pleasure of meeting Bill Harley and listening to his memorizing storytelling on more than one occasion...and he's BRILLIANT!

"Out upon the briny deep where the wild and wet winds blow,

There sailed a cruel and evil man, the pirate Dirty Joe.

He sailed upon the scummiest craft that ever left the docks

He roamed the world and seven seas in search of dirty socks.

So begins the tale of Dirty Joe the pirate. But he is about to meet his match---

“It's Stinky Annie” someone said, “and her band of smelly varmints.

She captures every boat she can and takes their undergarments.”

The war for socks and underwear has now begun"

I just ♥ this book! The clever rhyming and brilliant story make this a great book for families and little brothers!!

Storytime ♥ Highlighting Books for Chidren

The past few years my children have accumulated beautiful collection of storybooks. Being a Cherish Bound consultant and working out and about in the storytelling industry, I've had the privilege of being introduced to some amazing storytellers and writers. My children have received many storybooks from family and friends as well, and many we had never heard of until receiving them as gifts. Sometimes it's hard to find stories and books our children will love and finding a great storybook is always a prefect gift.

So be on the lookout each week as I highlight and share a storybook from my children's collection. I hope you find some new stories to share with your children. Feel free to comment and share your family's favorites too!

So here's goes the first book....

"Martina the Beautiful Cockroach"
My rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

I met the author of this book for the first time at the Jonesborough Storytelling Festival in Tennessee back in 2006. I fell in love with her stories, her energy...everything! She's absolutely incredible. Her name is Carmen Deedy and I've talked about her on my blog before. She's a phenomenal storyteller!

Our last Cherish Bound convention was at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and of course, Carmen was there. In the store I found one of her stories I had heard her tell, but it was in print, and I had to have it for me...and my kids too. It's called "Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach". Yes, it's a story about a Cockroach. It's a Cuban folktale that she has retold with a little Carmen-spice. Stirred it up a little bit of Spanish. It's an adorable story about a Martina the Cockroach who's looking for love....but doesn't know a thing about love and marriage. Her wise grandmother gives her advice that will help her find what she's looking for.

This book also came with a CD, so my kids love listening to it in the car as well. The book has beautiful illustrations by Michael Austin. The story is wonderful, humorous and the book is beautiful! Martina has her own website, Beautiful Martina.

You're kids will get a kick of the book, but you'll also get a some humor and a little laugh out of it too. It's a delight to read and Carmen is simply a breath of fresh air! Enjoy!

Confessions of an Ex-Scrapbooker #23

Wikipedia's definition of "Scrapbooking" ~ Scrapbooking is a method for preserving personal and family history in the form of photographs, printed media, and memorabilia contained in decorated albums, or scrapbooks. The idea of keeping printed materials of personal interest probably dates to shortly after the invention of printing. This trend is probably similar for photographs. Historically, scrapbooking was a tradition similar to storytelling, but with a visual and tactile, rather than an oral, focus.

Did you see that? Storytelling? Yes, the history of scrapbooking comes from the idea of "telling ones story"....yes, story! Scrapbooking came from the idea of writing story, capturing the essence of the photos in words, and having something to hand down to the next generation. And believe it or not, Mark Twain and Thomas Jefferson were also keepers of scrapbooks. Even back to the Victorian period, the young ladies had a tradition of giving "friendship albums".

The thrill and excitement of the traditional craft has taken it's own course, and I did spend some time there. I loved many things about "traditional" scrapbooking. I loved to BUY the stuff...I'm a shopper. I could spend HOURS in the little shops...and spent 1000's and 1000's of dollars (crap I hope my hubby doesn't read this post). I loved the crop nights with my friends. I loved looking at the pictures and trying to magically fit 19 photos and embellishments on an 8x11 piece of paper. (The competitor in me...sorry...always up for a challenge)

However......that excitement and challenge only lasted for so long. I was overwhelmed with oodles of scrapbooking "things"....paper coming out of the wazoo, pens, embellishments that cost a fortune, bags of stickers, files, carts.....and the list goes on. And spent more and more, made bigger messes, and got farther and farther behind. I was frustrated.

During that time I started reading "Roots" and had this overwhelming feeling of connecting with the past....with more than just pictures and pretty things. Alex Haley, the author of "Roots", introduced the book in the 1970's and a huge interest in genealogy was born. This interest in genealogy led to people wanting to capture their heritage. And that's what I wanted...heritage, story, memories, photos....

Late one night...or actually about 2am in the morning I was trying to get a few pages done in peace and quiet when I decided that something was wrong....this wasn't going the way I wanted it to go.

I asked myself a question, "Tara, why did you start scrapbooking?" I had one vision in my head....I could see myself older (flinch).... sitting down at the holidays or during the summertime with my kids and their kids and sharing these memories, stories, photos, and teaching them about where we all came from, who we are and were, what life was like. That's all I wanted. I realized that's not what I was doing....I wasn't preserving the most important part of my vision...the story.

I still love "Scrapbooking" but in the digital sense, with STORY. I love technology and I love the amazing things it provides memory keepers, storytellers and scrapbookers. I love what digital scrapbooking and technology is providing to people of all ages, all over the world. I love being a part of this movement with Cherish Bound. I love that I can teach people about the importance of story, how to organize, write, and preserve it for the many generations to come. Most of all, I love that we have our kitchen table back. ;o)

Next week's "Ex" post will be all about Digital Scrapbooking with a twist of story. Right now, Jessica Sprague is having the MOST AMAZING class that's guiding people into story....it's perfectly inspired!! It's awesome and I'm so very excited about it. (can you tell...) Hopefully you signed up for it!! It not, you have missed out....seriously!

Tuesday Tradition #32 - Thanksgiving & A GIVEAWAY!

There are only 4 Tuesdays, counting today, before Thanksgiving 2009 is here. This favorite holiday is known for the many blessings and celebrated through traditions. I'm going to share some of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions and ideas each Tuesday for the next 4 weeks.

One of my favorite things to do is listen to the members of our family tell stories. Many stories are being told and heard for the very first time. Some are repeats, with a slightly different twist and a little exaggeration, but most are just personal history, exciting events from the past year, past Thanksgivings, favorite memories and so on and so on.

Sometimes it can be hard to get the family talking or at least get them heading in the right direction. I like to avoid conflict, so for the past few years whether it's with all of our extended family or just my own husband and children, we have a tradition of sharing stories at the table. I get some help with this of course. I put a place card holder at each table setting. I don't put "name cards". I put one of Cherish Bound's Family Gathering Chat Cards at each person's place setting. Then around the house I take the cute little metal picture holders like the ones shown below and add chat cards to those. As people come to the table they can't help but take the card and read the story-inspiring question on the back. Throughout the house you can hear story swapping and tales being told as curious minds take the chat cards and begin asking questions. You never know what wisdom will be shared, what tall tale will be told, but through story our family comes together and connects on levels we never knew were possible.

I'd love to share these amazing Family Gathering Chat Cards with you all.....So I'm giving away a deck! All you need to do is comment and/or post about your Thanksgiving Family Traditions on your blog and link back here so we can all see and share our traditions. US residence only. Giveaway ends on Monday, November 17 @ 11:59 pm EST. I'll post the winner on my next Tuesday Traditions.

Halloween Traditions Countdown #2

There's nothing more fun than a night of swapping scary stories, in the dark, outside, by a small fire....with your kids! Yes, we get a kick out of scaring our sweet children....it's all in fun, but man, sometimes we get them good. Scary stories seem to be a sleepover tradition, camping tradition, and of course a Halloween tradition.

This past summer we moved and now have a place for an outdoor fire and plenty of room to share some stories. With Halloween falling on a Friday night, that leaves us some extra time to stay up late after trick-or-treating and have some family fun around the fire. Of course, they'll be some stories....scary ones. Not too scary that they'll have the bedroom and hall lights on for a month...just enough to get a fun little scream and maybe a giggle or two.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people that hears a great story and when it comes time to tell....forget it! I can't remember the details, they're out of order, and the only thing scary is my memory! So I've found some great links that have scary stories for kids. It can't be too hard to print them and read them right?

Here's a little list of some fun ideas for the "after-party":

  1. S'mores
  2. Firepit, Chimnea, Ring, etc.
  3. Hot cocoa
  4. Blankets
  5. Scary Stories
  6. Flash lights

Once Upon a Time...A Strong Sense of Self ***GIVEAWAY

Cherish Bound has supported and embraced the art of storytelling since Day 1. Cherish Bound has promoted and said repeatedly, "there is no substitute for the power, simplicity, and basic truth of the well-told story." Cherish Bound has found a way to bring story back to its roots, the family.

Cherish Bound now has an brilliantly laid out special interest page on our website all about storytelling. Click here to view the Storytelling Page. Learn about story and family and how putting Storytelling into your family will bring rewards beyond measure.

Storytelling is for everyone. For many years storytelling has been overlooked and assumed only for a certain crowd or generation....my friends, that's not so. Storytelling is where brilliant life is shared. I've heard and listened to many storytellers on the stage. It's an incredible experience to lose yourself in story. Something this special is not just for the stage and professionals...it's for individuals, children, parents, grandparents, families...and the list goes on. Many of us may never take the stage, but we can most certainly take center stage in our own living rooms.

Cherish Bound has featured Syd Lieberman on this new special interest page. I've had the privilege of sitting in a room with him and being personally instructed on the power of story. I've been blessed to hear his tales and learn about life. Check out his website and his newest CD, Abraham and Isaac: Sacrifice at Gettysburg. If its anything like his others, you will be swept away. I can't wait to hear it! ......and I'd love to give one a way!!!!!

Please take the time to read through this Storytelling page. The information is beautiful and real, and is exactly what Cherish Bound is all about. If you'd like to win a copy of Syd Lieberman's CD, Abraham & Issac, leave a comment and post about storytelling in your family with a link back to my blog and Cherish Bound's Storytelling page. Winner will be drawn November 13th!!

Lessons From the Tent...Convention Continued

Ask me if 5 or even 4 years ago if I'd ever been to a storytelling festival, ever wanted to go to one, or even had an idea or interest in storytelling and I would have said NO. Not a chance, not for me, didn't even cross my mind. But once I became a Cherish Bound consultant, I quickly learned that story is the root behind ALL things. It is the foundation of everything that I know. In order for me to teach other families how to love story and learn of its power within the walls of their home, I realized I needed to learn what story is all about.

You may have read my "Jonesborough" story. That is where it all began. You see, I had no idea that this ancient art form is the tread that ties each of us together. Without story would you know who you really are and where you get some of your "character" from? What about your ancestors and their stories? Would you know how World War 1 ended or how Moses parted the Red Sea? Would you know anything at all? I'm thinking probably not. What we know is because of story...whether it comes through a text book, a journal, or spoken word, we know what we know because of story.

For years, there's been a false impression about storytelling. "There's this misconception that storytelling is Grandma and Grandpa in a rocking chair on the porch, or putting babies down for the night," Bobby Norfolk said, "But storytelling is an ancient art form. The brain is actually hard-wired for telling stories." We are all storytellers. We may never take the stage, but we are all tellers at heart and mainstream America, soccer moms, white-collar corporate dad's and their families, struggling teens, and everyone else in between are finding this forgotten treasure and becoming apart of the experience.........

In the midst of the beautiful Provo Canyon and the shade of Mount Timpanogos, 1000's and 1000's of eager souls flood the perfectly laid story grounds for hours and hours of tales. The white tents riddle the mountain-side park as story lovers from all over the world, families of all sizes, school children and their teachers, educators, college students, and even Cherish Bound consultants map out their storytelling quest and events for the long, but much anticipated days ahead.

After mapping out the right schedule to make sure each favorite story teller can be heard, listeners flock to the rows and rows of chilled metal chairs to find their spots. Slightly restless, a little chatty, and some still snacking on the morning's breakfast everything comes to a complete stop, in an almost hypnotic state as the storyteller opens their heart. Norfolk says"We call that storyteller hypnosis. It's a power that takes over a room."

It happens time and time again. EVERY TIME without fail, a hush overtakes the crowd and I lose myself in the moment....in the story....I become a part of their world.

I love them all, but I will say I have my favorites. Three of my favorites were at this festival. Carmen Deedy, Bill Harley, and Kevin Kling. I can tell you this....within just a few hours time I went from laughing hysterically to crying while singing "Build Me Up Buttercup" (and I NEVER sing....especially in public), and then shaking my head wondering if I was hearing the truth....could such a thing happen to a person? And during the emotional roller coaster I was thinking of my own stories that were prompted out of my head, jotting them down on the back of a receipt so I wouldn't forget them again. I could find a common thread in each of their stories. Somewhere deep inside those stories I always found something that was all about me...something I could relate too.

I kept putting this post off because I wanted to go into detail about those three storytellers, but I just can't. I can't express in words what they do for me. It's kind of weird, I know, but if you experience this for yourself you'll nod and know what I'm talking about. Here's some great descriptions of these amazing storytellers found at www.timpfest.org.

Carmen Deedy: Known for her well-loved children’s books, Carmen Deedy flavors her stories with her unique upbringing as a Cuban in the Deep South. With wit and charm, Carmen refreshingly combines a variety of stories—from childhood memories to tales of Chaucer that leave her audiences smiling for days. Both as a storyteller and author, Carmen is unforgettable!

Ahh, I just LOVE HER! She will make you love remembering your childhood triumphs and battles! And her children's books are AWESOME!

Bill Harley: There’re no bones about it (except the funny bone), Grammy award-winning performer Bill Harley knows how to get an audience slapping its knees and laughing out loud. Whether his listeners are 5 years old or 105, Bill delights them with childhood tales, parenting anecdotes and coming-of-age blunders, each laced with morsels of profound wisdom.

He's a phenomenally talented person! In every way possible! I'm amazed at all the parenting advice I picked up from him in one short hour.

Kevin Kling: Known for stage shows and his popular commentaries on National Public Radio’s "All Things Considered," Kevin Kling is one of the most unique and dynamic tellers ever to come to the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. His autobiographical tales of hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning and growing up in Minnesota are hilarious and tender.

Kevin....wow.....you must experience meeting this amazing man! He's not only an inspiration to everyone who comes within a "tent" of him, but he's just so captivating and you find yourself always rooting for the underdog and.....wanting to be the underdog!

I promise you, as you step out into this new world of storytelling, not only will your private little world rotate slightly differently, but your family, friends and everyone around you will be able to join you in this amazing, forgotten art that deserve so much more attention. Lives change through stories and telling them is the first step.

Where Do I Begin...

"If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive."

—Barry Lopez

I don't know where to begin! After attending the Cherish Bound convention and Timpanogos Storytelling Festival I can honestly say that I have once again come away a different person. I'm a better woman mentally, spiritually
, as well as in business...and even physical. (Yes, lots of great food). My soul is so enlightened and my heart is full of gratitude and excitement!

My experience is almost impossible to explain or share. It's one of those "things" in life that can't be told, it must be felt. This will take a few days to tell, but I'm going to do my best to make sure I can share as much as possible with as much detail and feeling as I can. Just sitting here thinking about those days makes my throat get a slight lump and my eyes are starting to water. AHH! Get a grip Tara!

First I'll start with Convention....day one.
Our convention was held in the beautiful Mt. Timpanogos Park in Provo Canyon, Utah, among the beautiful white tents that housed 1000's of story lovers and tellers celebrating the 19th anniversary of the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. We had our own large tent nestled in the corner of the park where we met as consultants with our company's founders and corporate directors.

I arrived a day early and made my way to the empty park to meet with the 4 other national leaders and founders for a private leadership training. As I stood on a small hill in the park that overlooked the valley I couldn't believe what I was doing. I literally thought in my mind, "How lucky are you? How did I ever deserve such an opportunity?" I shook my head and found my way to our meeting under a beautiful wood pavilion that was warmed by the mountain sun where we officially began our conference.

The theme of our convention this year was "This is the moment...a moment you won't forget." Those words have never been more true! I kept repeating them in my head over and over again. I knew the very second I walked up the path and into the park that this would be a moment I would never, ever forget.

Day one of our scheduled convention was opened by our Co-Founder, Carol Rice. I could post 100 posts and still not be able to tell you how truly amazing this woman is. But for what it's worth, she is someone that I will continually strive to be like in all ways. She ranks among my most favorite people in the world...probably a hero. She spoke on "Ten Lessons from the Trail". She shared her personal experiences that she's had while hiking weekly in the local mountains. She related all of her trail lessons to those we can use within our business. Her simple lessons had a huge impact on all who listened in. She shared this beautiful quote..."There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few that will catch your heart...pursue them."

We were instructed on great basic business practices, one of the many great bonuses Cherish Bound consultants are blessed with. The business is basic and efficient, but the support from corporate makes it that much more attainable.

One of the most anticipated agenda items is always the unveiling of new products and programs! Oh, that's my favorite! I love to see what they've been working on and the amazing product ideas that they come up with. Just when I think we've tapped into every part of story, family, and publishing, they release more! Here is a list of new Cherish Bound product and tools that were officially released on Friday, August 28.

  • Music Story Starter: This is the first of 3 Story Starters in the new Hobbies Collection. This story starter helps you to share your appreciation for music no matter your talent level and guides you through the writing process.
  • Scouting Story Starter: Tell your scouting stories and memories with ease.
  • My Collection (Series of Firsts): Only someone who shares your passion can truly understand what your collection means to you. Help your family and friends gain an appreciation for your obsession with this mini story starter.
  • Places I've Called Home (Series of Firsts): This new addition to the Legacy Collection helps you remember all those special places and special times. The place combined with the moment is what made it important and deserves to be shared.
2 pre-made hardbound journals were added to complete the Journals collection.

  • Favorites Journal: Our "favorites" define us; they help us claim our identity. Knowing our favorites reminds us that joy can be found in the little, simple things of life.
  • Gratitude Journal: There's no question that an attitude of gratitude is beneficial. This small book will help you create a habit of gratitude in no time at all.
We also officially released our new Consultant Video. You can catch a link to view it right here. CLICK ME! You can meet me personally in this video... (wink-wink) We also released our new catalogs, opportunity brochures, and some other great consultant tools. VERY excited to use them all! We broke for lunch and then took our first adventure into the storytelling world. I have been to other festivals, but for some consultants this was their first time. It didn't matter if it was the first, second or third time, every single consultant and guest at the festival was swept away....I'll get into the storytelling more in a day or so. All I can say is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! We finished our night with a YUMMY dinner together and then celebrated our achievements and awards. I was quite surprised and pleased to find out that I was Top Recruiter, Had the most gatherings for the year and second in personal volume next to my wonderful, beautiful SIL (who is another one of my most favorite people in the world). It was an amazing year....but I think this year will be 100's better.....wish I could tell more.

Continued tomorrow...Day two of convention and
the storytelling.

I'm Back!

I'm back from Cherish Bound's National convention! All I can say is WOW-WOW-WOW!!!!!! I can't wait to share everything with you! I went to bed writing blog posts in my head...from the amazing storytellers to our new products that were released, the beautiful mountains and festival to the excitement surrounding Cherish Bound's incredible opportunity...I can't even think straight! It's going to take me 10 posts to give you everything! Hopefully I'll get my first post out tonight!

Why A Storytelling Festival?

When I tell people that I'm heading off to Cherish Bound's National Convention and I'm going to a Storytelling Festival...I always get the deer-in-the-headlights look and then a Huh? Storytelling Festival???

This year we'll be spending our convention nestled in the beautiful Utah mountains at the Mount Timpanogos Storytelling Festival. So why here? Because we're the experts in Family Storytelling. As consultants we're out in the middle of families and communities teaching them about the power of story and the simplicity and basic truth of the well-told story. My goal is to make sure everyone I know has at least one story to pass on to their families. I've learned through Cherish Bound as well as immersing myself in story that storytelling is not only an art, but it's a glue that will bind a family together. Story is magic for families.

I've attend 2 major storytelling festivals; Jonesborough, TN and Four Corners in New Mexico, as well as a handful of smaller ones. There is a unique energy that permeates from these festivals. I was one who had stereotyped storytelling and never gave it a chance, until I found Cherish Bound. We are encouraged to learn about the roots of storytelling, where it comes from, and get a better understanding of it so we can sincerely help families and those we come in contact with. I had no idea the impact it would have one me. I realized we're all storytellers at heart...some share on the stage, others through written pages, and a majority of storytellers are people like you and me....curled up on our couches with our children.

I have fallen in love with "storytelling". I get goosebumps when I think about sitting under the beautiful white tents waiting for the next storyteller to take over the stage...my thoughts and my heart! I literally lose myself in their stories and forget where I'm at. I could go on and on and on about this....so I will. But in tomorrow's post. I'll tell you about my incredible experience at the Jonesborough, Tennessee, storytelling festival that I attended in October 2006!

Heartwarming Stories: Family Story Time

Stories are what make us real and alive. They can bring out emotions from one extreme to another. They can connect the past with the future and they can heal our deepest wounds and fears. Stories are an important part of our existance on this earth. Whether they're shared through spoken word, printed on paper or even to a crowd of 100, they're worth telling.

Because I think it's so important to share stories, I'm keeping Sunday's all about stories. On Sunday's, I'll share some personal stories, have family share some and even have friends and guests come in and share a moment big or small that connected them, healed them or made them laugh.

But for this week, share a story with a child. It can be your own, from a book, or "make-believe". Just plan time to cuddle up and share a thought, moment or story. Start a tradition of telling stories to your children and grandchildren.

Traditions and Tales

Last weekend I attended Cherish Bound's annual convention in Farmington, NM. Farmington was hosting the "4-Corners Storytelling Festival" this same weekend. As I learned about the in's and out's of Cherish Bound as a business, I also learned the important roll I have as a Cherish Bound consultant in teaching people about the tradition of story. My job as a Cherish Bound consultant is to teach people, families, children, how to simply share their stories, get their families talking and help them find connections. What a great job I have...how blessed I am to be able to provide families ways to become closer to each other.

One of our newest books "Traditions" will help people start new traditions or keep the ones they have alive and thriving in their homes. Along with this beautiful new book, the new "Family Celebrations" is a pocket-size booklet full of questions and space to jot down daily thoughts and reminders from the year.
